Celebrating the Season Safely with Your Cat
The holiday season is a time for warmth, connection, and slowing down to enjoy the moments that matter. For many of us, our cats are right there beside us—curled up near the tree, supervising gift wrapping, and claiming the coziest spots in the house.
From all of us at KioKatt, thank you for supporting a small business this year. Every order, share, and kind word allows us to continue creating cat-friendly accessories with comfort, safety, and style in mind.
Holiday Safety Tips for Cat Parents
Decorations: Festive, but placed with care
Holiday decorations can be visually exciting for cats. Tinsel, ribbon, ornament hooks, and string lights should be kept out of reach or secured to reduce the risk of chewing, swallowing, or entanglement.
Seasonal plants and scents
Many popular holiday plants and strong fragrances can be irritating or harmful to cats. Faux greenery or confirmed pet-safe options are a safer choice for decorating.
Food and gatherings
Rich holiday foods and certain ingredients are not safe for cats. Keep plates and leftovers out of reach, and give your cat a quiet space to retreat to if guests or noise become overwhelming.
Holiday Costumes and Accessories: What to Know
Festive outfits and photo moments can be fun, but safety should always come first. Not all costumes or accessories are designed for extended wear, and supervision matters.
Breakaway collars are essential
Never leave your cat unattended while wearing a collar that does not have a breakaway feature. Non-breakaway collars can pose a choking or entanglement risk if they become caught on furniture, decorations, or costume elements.
If a collar does not include a breakaway buckle, it should only be used for short, supervised photo sessions or events, and then removed immediately.
Vests, sweaters, and costumes
- Vest-style costumes: These should be removed during nighttime or any period when your cat is unsupervised, as straps or structured elements may shift or catch while sleeping or moving.
- Sweaters: Generally lower risk when properly fitted and made of soft, flexible material, but still monitor for signs of discomfort or stress.
- Any costume: Never leave your cat alone while wearing it. Cats can become tangled, chew loose pieces, or panic if they feel restricted.
Watch for stress signals such as flattened ears, freezing, hiding, tail flicking, or attempts to escape. If you notice these behaviors, remove the outfit right away.
